Tibet Center New Mexico Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization incorporated in the state of New Mexico, was founded on July 6th 2001 to cater to the growing needs of Tibetan community of Albuquerque. Our primary goal is to preserve our culture by exposing our youth to the Tibetan language, religion, and traditions.
Prior to 1992, only three Tibetans lived in Albuquerque. Thirty more Tibetans relocated to Albuquerque when the US Immigration act of 1990 granted 1000 immigrant visas to Tibetans in India and Nepal allowing them to settle in various parts of the US. The first batch of Tibetans under this program arrived in July of 1992. These thirty Tibetans were hosted by Tibetan Resettlement Project of New Mexico, formed by volunteers to assist the newly arrived Tibetans adapt to their new way of life.
Since then, some of these thirty Tibetans have moved to other cities and others have started their new lives here, even having their family members move to the city. Today, around fifty Tibetans call Albuquerque their home.
